Exam Schedule
The final NSC examinations are conducted annually from October to December. This period is crucial for Grade 12 learners, as their performance in these exams will determine their future educational and career paths.
Registration Process
All learners must register to write the NSC examination by 15 March of the examination year. This includes all subjects, even those assessed by approved assessment bodies. It’s essential for students to ensure that their registration is complete to avoid any last-minute issues.
Who Can Write the NSC Exams?
The following individuals are eligible to participate in the NSC examinations:
- Current Grade 12 learners.
- Individuals who wish to improve their previous NSC results and are still NSC candidates (i.e., they have not had their certificates changed to the Senior Certificate).
Minimum Requirements
To obtain a National Senior Certificate, candidates must meet specific criteria:
- Achieve 40% in three subjects, including one official language at the Home Language level.
- Obtain 30% in three other subjects as stipulated in the policy.
- Provide full evidence in the School-Based Assessment (SBA) component for the subjects offered.
The Role of Umalusi
Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council, plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality of assessment during the Grade 12 year. It is responsible for issuing the National Senior Certificate to successful candidates, maintaining high standards in education.
Re-Examinations and Remarking
While the supplementary examination that used to take place in February/March has been phased out, candidates who have not succeeded can register for the June NSC examination to improve their results. Following the release of results, candidates can apply for re-checking or re-marking of their examination scripts within 14 days.
Handling Withheld Results
Results may be withheld due to irregularities. If this happens, candidates have the right to appeal. They can inquire in writing for the reasons behind the withholding and seek assistance from their schools or the district office.
Senior Certificate for Adults
In 2014, a new policy was introduced allowing adults aged 21 and older to write the Senior Certificate examination. This policy is designed to provide opportunities for out-of-school learners and adults who wish to further their education.
Admission Requirements for Higher Education
Understanding the NSC is vital for those looking to pursue further studies. Here are the minimum requirements for admission into higher education institutions:
- Higher Certificate: A minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching, as certified by Umalusi.
- Diploma: Requires a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching and a rating of 40% – 49% in four recognized subjects.
- Bachelor’s Degree: Candidates must achieve a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching and a rating of 50% – 59% in four recognized subjects.
