Mascom was the first company to receive a mobile telecommunications license in Botswana in 1998. The company was founded by Strive Masiyiwa, a visionary entrepreneur in the African telecom sector. Over the years, Mascom has undergone significant changes in ownership:

  • Until 2003, Portugal Telecom held a controlling stake in the company.
  • In 2005, MTN Group acquired a 44% stake in Mascom for $128 million.
  • By 2019, Dzene Makhwade-Seboni was appointed CEO, further driving Mascom’s growth.

Today, Mascom boasts the widest network coverage in Botswana, reaching over 95% of the population.
