What is the first-year experience all about?
We are here to help you acquire the skills required for university life.
- The First Year Experience Programme is a campus-wide focus on the student experience.
- Engages students in the excitement of the intellectual enterprise and socialises students into university work expectations.
- Exposes students to multiple opportunities for intentional learning – formal curriculum, student life, co-curricular programming, community-based and global experiences.
- Brings together teaching, extracurricular activities, counselling, mentoring, peer tutoring and supplemental instruction – transforming first year fragmentation into a congruent experience.
First-Year Mentors
FYE Mentors are a select group of student leaders dedicated to serving Wits University in the capacity of advocates for new students by fostering support in academic performance, achievement, and social development. FYE Mentors work in collaboration with the FYE programme, the Student Development and Leadership Units, Faculties and other support units within the University. FYE Mentors work as an Orientation Leader during the Orientation programme, assists with FYE classes, promote student activities, events and campus involvement. FYE Mentors serve as overall leaders and role models for new Wits students.
All FYE Mentors are equipped with skills in Personal Leadership and Mastery, Financial Literacy including Financial Aid Awareness, Presentation Skills, Diversity Management and the achievement of Academic Excellence.
