Why is University of Pretoria called tuks?

The University of Pretoria (UP) is one of Africa’s top universities and the largest contact university in South Africa. We conduct socially impactful research to find solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. We provide quality teaching and learning in the classroom, online or in the community. We support our students to graduate on time as well-prepared, responsible citizens for the world outside academia.

University of Pretoria may be derived from the Afrikaans initials of Uni U.K. (Universiteit Kaapstad) – Not a big jump from “ooo-kah” to “i-kee”. Regardless of origin, “Ikeys” is now a term of pride and UCT Rugby Club is also known as “Ikey Tigers”. The University of Pretoria is nicknamed ‘Tuks’ or ‘Tukkies’.
