History of the University of Botswana
UB has a rich history that dates back to 1964, when it was part of the University of Bechuanaland, Basotoland, and Swaziland (UBBS). This collaboration aimed to provide tertiary education to students from Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland. Over time, political and national interests led to the establishment of separate universities, with Botswana officially launching its own University of Botswana in 1982.
A defining moment in the university’s history was the One Man, One Beast (Motho le Motho Kgomo) movement, a national campaign led by Sir Seretse Khama to raise funds for the institution’s development. Batswana contributed cash, cattle, and other resources to support the establishment of UB, highlighting the nation’s dedication to education.
