SA FLAG – OVERVIEW

The new South African national flag was first hoisted on 27 April 1994. It was designed by Fred Brownell, the then State Herald, after a competition had failed to produce an acceptable flag. The flag was designed to be completely neutral. In other words neither the design nor the colours were assigned any meaning.

The flag was originally meant to be for an interim period only. However it proved to be so popular among all sections of the community that the Government decided to make it permanent. The design, method of construction and colours were written into the Constitution and the manufacture of the flag is controlled by the Presidency and the SABS.
