NaTIS Change of Ownership

The NaTIS change of ownership process is a legal requirement when transferring the ownership of a vehicle from one person to another in South Africa. This process ensures that the new owner is officially recognized and can lawfully operate the vehicle.

Who Needs to Apply?

You need to apply for a change of ownership in the following situations:

  1. Acquisition from a Deceased Estate: If you’ve inherited a vehicle from someone who has passed away.
  2. Previously Repossessed Vehicles: If you have acquired a vehicle that was repossessed and wish to register it in your name.

Required Documents for Registration

To successfully complete the NaTIS change of ownership process, you’ll need to gather the following documentation:

  1. Completed Application Form:
    • Form MVR1A or RLV.
  2. Identification:
    • For South African residents: RSA Identity Document.
    • For non-residents: Identity document from your home country or a Traffic Register Number Certificate.
  3. Business Registration Documents (if applicable):
    • For Companies: A certificate of incorporation or name change in line with the Companies Act.
    • For Close Corporations: A founding statement or certificate of name change per the Close Corporations Act.
  4. Documents for Deceased Estates:
    • A document verifying how you acquired the vehicle, such as:
      • A Letter of Executorship.
      • A letter from the appointed executor detailing your right of ownership.
  5. Documents for Repossessed Vehicles:
    • Additional documentation such as:
      • A court order.
      • Voluntary surrender documentation signed by the previous owner.
      • An affidavit if the previous owner refuses to complete the surrender documentation.

Acceptable Identification for Applicants

When submitting your application, you must provide acceptable identification. Here’s the order of acceptance:

For Natural Persons:

  1. South African ID book.
  2. Temporary South African ID certificate.
  3. South African passport (for citizens).
  4. Driving licence card from a South African DLTC.
  5. ID issued by a foreign country (for non-residents).
  6. Traffic register number certificate.

For Organizations:

  • For Companies or Close Corporations:
    • Enterprise certificate issued by CIPRO.
    • Traffic register number certificate.

Note: Always submit a copy of your acceptable ID alongside the original so that the authority can keep it on file.
