How do I know if SARS owes me money?

In South Africa, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) is responsible for administering and collecting taxes. If you believe that SARS owes you money, there are several steps you can take to check and possibly claim any refunds or amounts owed to you.

You can check if the South African Revenue Service (SARS) owes you money through the following steps:

Log in to your SARS eFiling account: Go to the SARS eFiling website and log in with your SARS eFiling username and password.

Check your Statement of Account (ITSA): Your ITSA shows the overall balance on your tax account (including any applicable penalty and interest) as well as your transaction history per tax year. If SARS owes you money, the refund amount and payment date will show on your ITSA.

Check your Notice of Assessment (ITA34): The payment date for the amount owed by you to SARS can be seen on ITA34. The amount owed by you to SARS is also displayed on the screen.

Check your tax compliance status: On the My Profile page, you will see a section called “Tax Compliance Status”1.

If you don’t have access to the SARS eFiling portal, you can call their call center at 0800 00 7277 and ask for a balance inquiry.
