Botswana Open University (BOU) is a premier institution dedicated to providing quality education through Open and Distance Learning (ODL). Formerly known as the Botswana College of Distance and Open Learning (BOCODOL), BOU was established to meet the growing demand for flexible and accessible tertiary education in Botswana. The transformation from BOCODOL to BOU was driven by the Tertiary Education Policy, which recommended the creation of a comprehensive national distance education institution.

History and Establishment The transformation of BOCODOL into BOU was initiated by the Presidential Directive CAB 37 A of 2011. This directive paved the way for the Botswana Open University Bill, which was passed by Parliament on July 20, 2017. The Act was then signed into law by His Excellency, Lt General Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, marking a significant milestone in Botswana’s educational landscape.
